About Drex

Drex Weaver has been performing professionally since 1987 and plays a wide variety of styles. As a freelance musician, he will perform jazz one night, rock or blues or brazilian music the next. It is his versatility, energy and style that makes him an in demand performer. As a composer, arranger and bandleader, Drex leads The Drextet in performing original compositions as well as contemporary and latin jazz.

A graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Drex is a well rounded performer and composer. Having earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in two and one half years, he earned the respect of his instructors and colleagues. In addition to the drumset, Drex performs on the cajon, congas, pandeiro, hadjira, bongos and also plays and composes on guitar, bass, piano and clarinet. It is his ear for these other instruments that makes him a sensitive and supportive musician.

Throughout his career, Drex has played with world class musicians and strong, creative, powerful players. These include, internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, Hod O’Brien, Royce Campbell, John Dearth, Yasuhito Mori and Mike Hawkins. Rock and pop artists such as Dave Matthews, The Boyd Tinsley Band, LeRoi Moore, Matt Nathanson, All Mighty Senators, Geoff Tyson, Matt Fish and Clare Quilty have also employed him for his skills. On the international music scene in the US, Drex has worked in styles from Africa to Brazil with artist such as Mir Ali, Humberto and Madeline Sales, Darrell Rose and Baaba Seth. As a drummer and percussionist, Drex continues to serve the music with passion and style in whichever genre he plays.

Although his performing keeps him busy, Drex teaches privately on drums, percussion, bass, guitar, piano, clarinet, music theory and ear training. In his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, Drex has lead his own music camp for kids, has taught a rock music ensemble, and put on clinics for drum tuning. He has also toured with The Dave Matthews Band as a Horn Technician and All Mighty Senators as a guitar and back line tech. Drex has enjoyed a career that has afforded him travel and experience that continues to enrich and influence his life in ways well beyond what he imagined when he began his musical development.
